
Bridging the Mind-Body Argument

Introduction
Have you ever stumbled upon the age-old philosophical debate about whether there is a mind-body connection and read frustrating discussions with no definite conclusion? The clash of ideas may have left you wondering: ‘Why should I care, if there’s no practical application?’
Personally I was surprised to hear of this debate because there’s positive proof in my work-world that suggests this connection is very real. Perhaps you have also personally experienced some form of this special connection in your own life?
Descartes’ didn’t have a crystal ball to see how we would come to embrace modalities that destroy his thesis on mind-body dualism.
Exploring the Mind-Body Relationship
While philosophers debated, practitioners of Acupuncture have explored the mind-body relationship for over 5,000 years. Personally, I’ve experienced evidence of this connection using approaches such as bioenergetic muscle-testing. Unlike philosophical musings, this approach offers a pure, direct form of biofeedback which shows the connection between mind and body that is easily observable by the person who is experiencing it.
The Benefits of Bioenergetic Muscle Testing
When performed by a properly trained facilitator bioenergetic muscle-testing is a practical tool. One way of utilizing it is to reveal the physiological impact of thoughts. Similar to a lie-detector test but without electrodes or machines, it allows us to identify stressful thoughts that cause observable muscle reactions. To experience this means that you can’t hold your arm up away from your body when it is gently pushed down while you think any stressful thought. The kicker is that it can be a surprise to you as to what actually causes you stress! One of the best benefits is that you can then focus on clearing what is a priority versus wasting time on what isn’t. This efficient approach allows you to function better in multiple areas of your life as a side-effect.
This tool also indicates what to do in order to neutralize stressors. This can include touching specific acupressure points, activating neurological reflexes, or performing something else from a menu of possibilities. Muscle testing’s goal is usually to restore a person to better homeostatic balance. Once the stressor is deactivated, clients can revisit previously stressful thoughts without triggering physical reactions driving their adrenals to overwork while fostering resilience which allows them greater ease in navigating life.
Beyond the Physical Body
There is a perception that the results I obtain in my clinic and the modality that I teach focusses just on the physical plane.The reality is that physical discomfort or dysfunction doesn’t only stem from overuse or injury. You probably already realize that mental stress affects you — think about the tension you feel in your neck and back when you are under pressure, or the fact that your digestive system can get tied up in knots when you are upset.
A Real-Life Example
A client’s recent experience beautifully illustrates this concept. Seeking the physical relief she expected from Muscle Tuning™ based on a prior experience, she came in for a body tune-up.
