Walking Provides More Than Health
If you had another reason to ‘just walk’ would you do it?

Do you find time to take walks just because it’s good for you? We all know that it’s easy and for most of us there is nothing getting in the way of this form of exercise — other than mindset.
Is taking a walk something that ‘just has to get done’ and does it feel like a bit of a chore? You’ve noticed that having something to distract us encourages us to walk for longer periods of time.Having a friend along on a walk helps. So does listening to music or a podcast, enjoying the company of our dogs, as well as being present in the moment and really paying attention to our surroundings.
This article was inspired by Tatiana Schloessman and her article on the benefits of solo-walking. Her article reminded me about something I used to do but had completely forgotten. I’d like to share that with you now in case you don’t already do this yourself.
Access Your Creative Mind
I’ve gotten away from the habit of setting a challenge for my mind to ponder during my solo-walks. That where I start a walk thinking about something I want to fix and allow my conscious brain to suggest possible solutions. I keep this up for several minutes but it doesn’t take very long.
Then, magic can happen when I totally give up thinking on the challenge and simply keep on walking. If I’m not navigating somewhere that requires a lot of attention for my safety, nor listening to a podcast or music containing lyrics, then my unconscious brain seems to continue working away to find creative solutions and begins popping ideas into my mind. Has this ever happened for you?
I return home with new perspectives and renewed physical and mental energy.

Moving forward (figuratively), I will feel less disappointed when I can’t find a walking partner. I will remember to treasure my solo-walking-time and activate this forgotten technique to make my life better with every solo-walk that I take.
